Summary: Philip Burton wasn’t the first, and he probably wouldn’t be the last person to underestimate him.

         “I underestimated you, Connor.”

Philip’s words still echoed in Connor’s mind long after the man had left the building. Connor inwardly cringed at the way he had smiled and nodded and accepted it, too afraid that he was going to be fired (again) to say anything else. Besides, it wasn’t like it was unfamiliar territory for Connor. Philip Burton wasn’t the first, and he probably wouldn’t be the last person to underestimate him. Hell, Philip was nothing more than the latest in a long line of people who overlooked him as nothing more than an overly exuberant geek.

That might have been true three years ago, but it sure as hell wasn’t the case now.

Connor headed back to his locker, making sure there was no one else around before he dug out his latest ‘project’, and took it to the storage room where he’d been working in the quiet periods. He didn’t have an office, or even his own bloody computer any more. Damn near every piece of anomaly related technology that they had was down to him, and him alone, and yet the bastards couldn’t even see fit to give him anywhere decent to work now he was back.

The irony was it actually suited Connor’s purposes that he was out of the way where no one else bothered to go. Where there was a place that he could hide from the ever present security cameras and work in privacy.

Still, he couldn’t deny it hurt. Still being thought of as the geek, the idiot, an ‘amateur’, good for nothing but techie work. Still being underestimated, despite everything he had achieved. Had they not noticed the part where he had survived for a year in the bloody Cretaceous, for god’s sake!

It was times like this when he missed Cutter the most. Not just the man himself, although Connor knew that he did miss Cutter in that way even now, over a year after his death. But it was more for the simple fact that Cutter was probably the only person who had ever actually given him credit for his achievements, who had openly acknowledged his abilities, encouraged him, and believed in him.

That was at least part of the reason why he was so determined to continue Cutter’s work. Cutter had passed the responsibility on to him, and Connor did not intend to disappoint the only person who had ever truly believed he could do it. This wasn’t about proving himself any more. He was sick and tired of having to prove himself over and over. This was about Cutter’s memory, and finishing the work that Cutter had cared so passionately about. Chasing dinosaurs around and saving lives was fun, but that was just the most obvious aspect of their work. The real goal had always been to understand and, if possible, predict and control the anomalies. Whether the others realised it or not, Connor’s priority now was about fulfilling Cutter’s ambition. He was sick of being trodden on, mocked, or simply ignored and overlooked. In doing this, it felt like he was finally taking control of his own destiny.

Connor focussed his attention on the anomaly opening device. Of course he had lost the one that had enabled them to get home, but everyone else seemed to have forgotten about the other device, the one that had died on them less than an hour after they used it to chase Helen into the past. All it needed was a new power source and then there was no reason why it shouldn’t give up all its secrets to him. If he could get this to work, he might be able to use it to retro-engineer the computer they had found in the future ARC, perhaps even rebuild the artefact. And if he could do that, then he would be able to predict anomalies, and more importantly, open and close any anomaly at will. He, Connor Temple, would have complete control of one of the most dangerous and powerful discoveries in the world.

He’d like to see the bastards underestimate him then.

thanks. That bunny has been nibbling at my ankles ever since that scene at the end of ep 3 when Burton said he underestimated him. And I'm surprised they've all forgotten about the other anomaly opening device (actually, this is Primeval; I'm not that surprised, to be honest...)

Ooooooo, slightly scary!Connor there at the end. Excellent ficlet. I could totally see him really thinking all this. :-)

I seem to have scary Connor on the brain recently, I keep wanting to write fics that play with his dark side *evil grin*.

Also, I think I may be chanelling my own anger and frustration at the way the scriptwriters keep treating him, especially in the first few eps of series 4.

Yeah, that sounds about right. You should translate that to smut. That's always fun. Where do you think I came up with the Temple Dungeon stuff. LOL!

On a side note, you were right. He looks really hot in the seaside scenes. :-)

Indeed. Connor has the potential to be very dangerous indeed with all his knowledge. It's a good thing he's one of the good guys.

Ooh, cunning plan! And this is damn well what I want TFWIC to do with Connor on the show!

I am so annoyed with the way they've treated him in series 4, that he had to prove himself *again* just get his own job back, and even then Jess has taken over all his techie responsibilities. I feel I may have been channelling that a tad...

I've always maintained that Connor is the most dangerous man in the ARC at any given time simple by virtue of the fact that he's created the tech that runs it. Connor has every potential to be the one to destroy the world if he wanted to, it's a good thing he's good to his core. That being said, you can only push him around for so long. Loved this insight and this potentially likely tale.

Oh, he's definitely got the potential to be one of the most dangerous people in the entire ARC if he chose to use his knowledge and intelligence for anything other than good purposes.

I know it doesn't seem to be in Connor's character to stand up to anyone, no matter how they treat him, but just once I'd like to see him get some respect and actually call people on it when they treat him like crap and walk all over him.

Connor as evil!genius is excellent. Okay, not evil-evil. Just evil as in not following the rules. If he can rebuild the device, he'd use it for his own agenda, but as his agenda is for the good of humanity the only issue I might have with this is...uh...if he decided to go back and save Cutter's life....

Damn plot bunny!

hee! Thanks, glad you liked. I do like playing with the possibility of scary dark side Connor.

Oh! That last line is kind of scary!

Still, if you think about it, Conner is WAY more dangerous because of his great intelligence. If he ever went dark side...

yep, Connor has the potential to be *very* dangerous if he ever decides to use his knowledge and intelligence for evil purposes. Good thing for everyone that he's a good guy... as long as they don't push him too far *evil grin*.

excellent, scary is good! I've been playing with dark and scary Connor ideas more and more recently, although I suspect this is because I'm pissed off with the way they're treating him in series 4 and I'm channelling my own anger and frustration.

I wish he really would stand up to people when they treat him like that, but it's just not in him. I wish it was, though, he'd make an awesome scary bad guy

Everyone (inluding the scriptwriters) seems to have forgotten about the other device. I assume they must have lost it in the cretaceous, but since they never actually mentioned it all I feel free to use it in fic like this.

Poor Connor, I've not been too happy with what they've done with him this series (as you can probably tell). If he ever did go to the dark side it would surprise the hell out of everyone!

I certainly think Burton has other 'projects' going on, I just hope Connor doesn't fall under his control completely.

They really do keep underestimating Connor - even Abby, which is disappointing. I can see this easily being something he would do during all the times when people were ignoring him.

From: [identity profile] deinonychus-1.livejournal.com
He relly doesn't seem to get the credit or recognition that he deserves, does he? And the thing with Connor is that he doesn't even need much - just an acknowledgement or a 'well done' would probably put a huge grin on his face, but nobody apart from Cutter even seemed to be able to do that.
