“Stephen! Open this door right now!”
Cutter slammed his fist against the door as Stephen backed away into the room full of predators.
“Cutter!”
He heard Connor’s voice yelling but couldn’t tear his eyes away from Stephen. The creatures were starting to circle menacingly.
“Stephen!”
“Out of the way, Cutter.” Someone grabbed his arm and wrenched him away from the tiny window in the door. Connor and Abby took one glance into the room, and they both swore.
“What’s going on?” Lester barked as he hurried down the corridor towards them, followed by Jenny and a line of soldiers.
“Stephen’s in there with a bunch of predators,” Abby said.
“Well what are you waiting for? Get him out.”
Cutter was too stunned and incredulous to resist when Connor dragged him out of the way. Lester braced himself, and fired the rocket launcher at the door from frighteningly close range. The explosion nearly deafened them all, but when the smoke cleared they all piled through the ragged hole where the door had been.
“Here.” Abby pressed a gun into Cutter’s hand.
“Stephen! Get down!” Connor yelled.
Stephen hit the floor and covered his head with his arms as firepower filled the room, swiftly followed by the shrieks of injured animals.
Cutter saw a raptor going for Stephen’s prone body and without thinking he opened fire on it. Beside him Jenny was taking down a future predator with an assault rifle, and on his other side Connor and Abby were stood together covering each other even as they picked off individual targets with their pistols.
Eventually the last creature stopped moving, and everything became quiet.
Cutter ran over to Stephen.
“Stephen! Are you all right?”
“I think so.” Stephen slowly picked himself up.
“God, Stephen. What the hell were you thinking? Don’t you ever do anything like that again.”
“I had to.” His eyes were still wary, as if he expected another argument, even now.
“No you didn’t. You have nothing to prove to me, Stephen. You never did. This is all my fault. I’m sorry. I know I should have said that a long time ago, but I’m saying it now. I’m sorry, Stephen.”
“But... what do you have to be sorry about? I’m the one who hurt you.” Stephen’s confusion would have been funny in any other circumstance.
“I don’t care about what you did any more. I care about you, Stephen.”
Cutter pulled him into a hug, and Stephen wrapped his arms round Cutter, burrowing his head into Cutter’s shoulder.
“About bloody time,” Connor called across the room at them.
“Can I assume he isn’t fired any longer?” Lester said as he surveyed the room. “It would avoid lots of paperwork.”
Cutter finally let go and stepped back. He smiled at Stephen.
“You’re an idiot, Stephen. But you’re my idiot.”
“Same goes for you,” Stephen said with the first genuine smile that Cutter had seen since that day in the Forest of Dean when Helen had tried to destroy everything.
Cutter glanced across at his team, the best damn team in the world as far as he was concerned.
Connor and Abby were grinning at him, and even Jenny looked happy, although the assault rifle was a little incongruous with her smart skirt and blouse.
“Hey Abby, I think this means we saved the day,” Connor said. “High five to us.”
He held his hand out to her. Abby hesitated, and then ignored the hand and pulled him into a bone crushing hug. There was glint of humour in her eyes when she spoke.
“You know what Cutter said? Same goes for you, Connor. You’re my idiot.”
Lester rolled his eyes. “Yes, yes. This is all very touching, but I still want an official report from each of you by the end of the day.”
“Stuff reports,” Jenny said. “Let’s just go to the pub.”
At that moment Cutter wanted to hug all of them. He had a strong suspicion that with a couple of pints inside him, he would end up doing just that, and damn the jokes and teasing that might come afterwards. For once they had got their happy ending, and right then he was too happy to care.

Date: 2009-08-18 10:05 pm (UTC)Lester with a rocket launcher, and Stephen not being fired meaning less paperwork, the various your my idiot comments, and Jenny with the assault rifle and the very sensible pub suggestion.
Loved it!
