Life on Earth started in the ocean. Every palaeontologist knows that. As a teenager, Connor loved the idea that the origins of life were the result of alien experiments. These days, his theories are a lot less fun.

Now he wonders if life was started by a random organism from the past, present or future straying through an anomaly into the sterile Precambrian ocean. What if life from Earth created life on Earth? Then life would be the universe’s biggest ever perpetual time-loop paradox; a freakish, fragile accident.

Sometimes, in the dark of night, Connor finds these thoughts rather frightening.

You were quick off the mark again! I dithered for a short while whether to write this as Cutter or Connor pov, but while Cutter might think of the possibilty of life starting that way, only Connor would think in terms of time-loop paradoxes.

And only Connor would lay awake at night and worry so much!

With someone like Connor, I suspect that sometimes that much intelligence is as much a curse as it is a blessing.

Actually, I find those thoughts rather frightening! Not to mention they give me a headache! *g*

Very cool take on the prompt.

I'd been having thoughts on this for quite a while, but never found an appropriate fic to voice them in until I saw this prompt, and then it was sudenly perfect.

Super-scary, as Connor might say! But very good :-)

Thanks. I wonder if Connor ever did finish that dissertation of his about aliens starting life on earth? This theory would make a great dissertation, but Cutter would be the only other person in academia who would ever be able to read it!

Thanks. It is kind of wierd and scary when you try to think about it too hard.

I always try not to think to hard about time loops and paradoxes, it tends to make my head want to implode. :)

That idea has been nagging away in the back of my mind for a while now. I wonder if it's something that the show's producers have thought of? Once you add anomalies to the equation of evolution, you get all sorts of interesting options for sudden radical bursts of evolution, or mass extinctions and such like.

nice idea, Connor.

anybody can get nightmares from other people; it takes intelligence (ie Connor) to give one'sself nightmares.

excellent drabble.

I missed this!
This is very much a Connor thought. He may not be his own grandfather he may be *everybody's* grandfather!

I do like that idea of the origins of life on earth being a time loop pradox, and I bet Connor would be just the person who'd think of something like that.

that would make it very fragile...or reinforcing, buffering(?).

very nice thoughts you've brought up.

and a good Connor.

brava!
