I like that you're defending Abby against the whole damsel in distress accusations in this. While weak women characters who always have to be rescused by men are annoying, I do tend to get equally annoyed about the fact that apparently being a 'strong woman' means you never have to get rescued (by anyone!) - how is that any more realistic? Abby does her fair share of the rescuing - it stands to reason that occasionally she's going to need to be rescued in turn, especially given what they all deal with every day.
When she resurfaces, along with a mer creature, Abby gets to her feet and launches an impressive flying kick at it, knocking it back into the water.
And thereby proves that her way of kicking is just as good as Caroline's, which I've always loved as a nice little reference :)
(Also, I have to say that I've always thought it was a mer king rather than queen, but that's just me...)
