            Lester caught his gaze straying towards the ADD yet again, and briefly allowed himself to contemplate the empty chair where Jess Parker should have been.

            She had no business being trapped on the wrong side of an anomaly. Of all the bloody stupid...

            Lester shook his head. It wasn’t that he doubted her ability. In front of a computer, plugged into the comms system, Jess was the voice of sanity and control in situations that were usually completely insane, and frequently out of control.

            But surviving in the past?

            Lester could only hope that Becker had found her in time.

Jess gripped the EMD and stared out into the night, willing her heart to stop racing at the slightest sound. Beside her, Becker twitched, and she gently reached out and stroked his hair until he settled again.

 “We’re doing this together,” Jess had insisted.

Becker apparently didn’t think this applied to the night watch.

By day five he was almost too exhausted to argue when she prised the EMD out of his hands and ordered him to stop being a stubborn bastard and sleep, now.

She could handle a few hours in the dark, alone. She could.

She had to.
