I'd written most of this before series 2 aired, and had some very definite ideas about how I thought Helen was finding her way around the past. By the time the show introduced the idea of the radio interference and the anomaly detectors, I was already too far into the story to change it, so I just thought, 'sod it,' and completely ignored the S2 developments and went with what I'd planned all along.
