This is a really good episode for Abby in a lot of ways, I think, despite all the supposed 'damsel in distress' stuff. And yes, you can say it's sexist to have the female being the one being rescued, but at the same time, can you imagine Abby being able to hold Connor with one hand over a cliff? Abby, though she's strong and can fight, is still the smallest of the team. She's a capable fighter, but there's only so much she can do as small, lightweight female.
My biggest objection to the cliff scene is that she's not show reaching up much with her free hand. I think if I was in danger like that I'd grab on to anything. But you could argue that as you've said, she was pretty much at the end of her resources after hours held in the tank.
I wonder if it was part of Caroline's brief to get between Abby and Connor, or if she just played that by ear. She certainly makes no attempt to befriend Abby.
And I must admit it didn't dawn on me till after I had watched the ep that the boat could have moved to Jenny! Really, if they wanted to play it that way, they could have chucked in a line or two about the engine stalling or something, especially as it makes the soldier in the boat look a right twonk for not doing anything.
